Linksys Information

Here is some information about the Linksys BEFSR41 (and I suppose BEFSR11) Cable/DSL router products:

The Linksys Cable/DSL router products are probably not bad products, but there have been problems with both the firmware for these products and with Linksys' ability to support these products.  Many people have reported having difficulties getting Linksys' tech support department to resolve problems with these products in a timely manner.  A few lucky individuals (myself included) have not only been able to reach a competent support technician, but we have also received experimental versions of the firmware for these routers.  Due to what must be internal communications problems at Linksys, many people could call in reporting the same problem and only 1 of them might actually be told that there is an experimental firmware release that fixes the problem.  To get around this problem I've posted some experimental firmware versions that I have acquired which other Linksys customers might want to use with their own routers until Linksys actually posts updated firmware for download from their own web site.

Please feel free to download these firmware releases for use on your Linksys BEFSRx1 Cable/DSL routers.  These firmware releases were obtained by people who were having problems with their routers locking up when they had TCP ports forwarded back to internal web/ftp servers on the private side of their network.  If you do install this firmware and you continue to experience any problems with your router then you will probably need to downgrade to v1.36 or older in order to get support from Linksys.

*NOTE* - In late 12/2000 Linksys posted a new release of the firmware (v1.37) that was defective.  This downloadable firmware kit was named "befsr137.zip" and it was 701,495 bytes in size.  In early 1/2001 Linksys posted yet another release of the firmware that was also called "befsr137.zip" and had the same version (v1.37) as the bogus firmware.  This fixed v1.37 firmware file was 701,980 bytes in length.  If you made the mistake of downloading the bad version 1.37 file, download the fixed one from either the Linksys site or from here.  This fixed v1.37 firmware should be used in place of any of the v1.36t* experimental firmware releases.
